Can You Use an Airsoft Gun For Self-Defence? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t.

I once got robbed and the experience was quite traumatising. For months, I constantly had thoughts of what I could have done to protect myself in the situation and things I did wrong that led me to being vulnerable and open to becoming a target. My thoughts led me to wondering, can I use an Airsoft gun for self defence? Is it a good idea and would it put me in more danger than not having protection? So, I did some research on the topic and here is what I found.

Can you use an Airsoft gun die self-defence? The answer is a resounding NO. This is because though  Airsoft guns resemble real firearms, they lack the firepower to do any kind of damage to the assailant and you may end up exposing yourself to real mortal danger if the assailant is carrying a real firearm. Though you can use the airsoft gun as a deterrent to anyone who wants to attack you, once they discover that you have no real power, they may seek to punish you for it. Below, I break down my reasons for this position and good alternatives to using an Airsoft gun for self-defence.

No real damage

A stock airsoft gun shoots at a maximum of 600 FPS. This is barely the energy required to penetrate the skin out alone cause an injury that would stop anyone who is intent on attacking you.

Airsoft Guns not effective at stopping an oncoming attacker

A simple calculation: An average airsoft gun fires a .20 gram bb at 360 feet per second. This gives the gun a muzzle energy of 0.89 foot-pounds, or 1.14 joules. In comparison, a common 9mm round has a muzzle energy of around 383 foot-pounds, or 519 joules. Thats almost 500 times as powerful! A common air rifle, which isn’t quite lethal, is still about 20 times as powerful.

This means even among airguns an airsoft gun is worse at stopping someone who is coming at you.

The worst that an airsoft gun can do to you is create award if you are shot on the bare skin. if you are shot in a place that is well covered with clothes you would hardly feel the impact.

Use an Airsoft guns as a threat.

This means that if you ever use an airsoft gun for self-defense you should never attempt to shoot it since the facade that you will have created will be immediately lifted and you will not have any other defence.

The main way in which you can use an airsoft gun for self-defense is by brandishing it as away of deterring a potential attacker from coming any closer. The fact that many airsoft guns have an uncanny resemblance to real firearms gives them an advantage as a way of deterring a potential attacker by making them believe that what you’re holding is a deadly force then can cause mortal injury to them.

Airsoft guns that you can use for self defence

First off I want to make it very clear that I do not recommend this as a way of defending yourself.  as I’ve mentioned airsoft guns can cause no actual damage and they may bring you more harm than good when your assailant realises that you do not have a real gun.

However, if you would like to proceed and use an airsoft gun as a way of protecting yourself, you need to ensure  that the gun you will use will be as realistic as possible to be sure that your assailant thinks that you are holding the real thing.  A good option for this would be a gun that does not have an orange tip and is very similar to real firearms. It would also be probably helpful to have a gun that has high fps so that in the ill advised moment when you pull the trigger, you will injure the assailant, or at least stun them enough for you to get away.

A good category of airsoft guns that you can use for self defence are the co2 gas powered guns that are generally higher fps than other airsoft guns.

Below are a list of airsoft guns you can choose from that can serve as good self defense guns (to scare off an attacker)

Self defense tools that are more effective than Airsoft guns

they are better methods of protecting yourself from attack then using an airsoft gun period these methods are better at immobilizing the attacker and giving you enough time to escape. Some of these methods are:

Taser gun

Taser guns are a good way of immobilizing an attacker without hurting causing permanent injury to them.  On top of this, there are many variations of taser guns that are disguised as everyday items you would be carrying with you and this would help you carry it around without causing alarm but still stay protected when you are attacked.

I did some research on some good tasers on Amazon and here is what I found

Taser Pulse

This particular stun gun looks like a  firearm and may not be allowed in to some places.

Here is a short video on how effective the Taser Pulse is

Here are the pros and cons of the Taser Pulse:

Pros
  • It’s really effective. As you have seen on the video.
  • Its Light and easy to carry.

Cons
  • There are a number of people who have complained about the battery going out after a  few months of storage. This is a big one and may be the deal breaker for me.
  • Once you use it, the replacement cartridges cost around $40

Pepper spray

The great thing about pepper spray is that it is a quick and really effective way of immobilizing an attacker. It will give you a great opportunity to escape and you most likely will not be followed.

I did some research and found the following pepper spray options that you can check out.

SABRE 3-IN-1 Pepper Spray

This is one of the best sellers on Amazon and it gives great protection against multiple attackers and can be effective from over 10 feet.

Here is a video demonstration of how it works

Conclusion

Though using an airsoft gun as a way of defending yourself seems like a good idea, as I have shown above, there are other more effective ways of both threatening the attacker to prevent them from coming any closer and if they do, acting on the threat and immobilizing them
